Lindy Hop

Lindy Hop has it's roots in Charleston and was developed in the late 1920's in Harlem. It got it's name after Charles Lindberg's trans-atlantic flight in 1927. It's a partner dance, danced principally to swing music and is characterised by 'breakways' where the partners separate and improvise moves individually. Often some of the moves take on an acrobatic character although these tend to be reserved for performance rather than social dancing.

Lindy Hop evolved into different dance styles as rock n roll music took over from swing where the moves were done to 6 beats rather than 8. Lindy Hop is still widely danced throughout the UK where the dancers enjoy a relaxed social atmosphere. Unlike other forms of dance, swing dance events don't require you to have a regular dance partner as changing partners after every dance or two is common.
