Charleston The 'Charleston' originated in Charleston, South Carolina in the 'Roaring 20s'. Before then, dancing closely with a partner was regarded socially unacceptable, however in the 20's it was the time of prohibition where women were voting and smoking cigarettes. It was also the time of the speakeasy and that's where you could see the flapper girls performing the Charleston. However it was short lived and evolved with kicks and people pairing up doing side by side movements, eventually it developed into Lindy Hop. www.swingtimedance.co.uk
